About gold in Singapore
Gold market in Singapore
Singapore has become Asia's leading bullion storage and trading centre since investment precious metals were made tax-exempt in 2012. Prices are quoted in Singapore dollars per gram and per ounce, tracking loco-London spot, and the Singapore Bullion Market Association coordinates the market. Little India's Serangoon Road and the South Bridge Road jewellers are the main retail districts, with strong demand for 22 karat gold from the Indian and Malay communities.
Taxes and import duties
Investment Precious Metals (IPM) — gold of at least 99.5% purity in bar, wafer or qualifying coin form — are fully exempt from the 9% GST. Jewellery is not exempt: 9% GST applies to the full retail price including workmanship. There is no import duty on gold, and no capital gains tax on resale.
Popular karats and purities
22k (916 gold) is the dominant retail jewellery standard, especially for Indian bridal sets sold by weight. 18k and 14k are used for Western-style and diamond jewellery, while 24k (999.9) appears as bars, wafers and coins for investment. Look for the 916, 750 or 999.9 stamp rather than a karat word.

Buying tip
Ask explicitly whether an item qualifies as IPM — a 999.9 bar is GST-free, while an otherwise identical 916 chain adds 9% plus workmanship. For 22k jewellery, compare the per-gram rate against 91.6% of the day's 999 gold price to see the true markup.
