How to Sell Gold
Selling gold is simple once you know what it's worth. Use these six tips to walk into any buyer with realistic expectations.
Weigh in grams
Use a digital jewelry scale accurate to 0.01g. Most buyers price by the gram and will weigh in front of you — bring your own scale to compare.
Sort by karat
Separate items by stamp: 24k, 22k, 18k, 14k, 10k. Mixing karats lets buyers weigh everything at the lowest purity.
Calculate the melt value
Multiply weight × karat factor × current spot price per gram. Our Scrap Gold Calculator does this for you instantly.
Get at least three quotes
Try a local bullion dealer, a pawn shop and an online mail-in service. Offers can vary by 20–40% for the same item.
Know the typical payout
Honest scrap buyers pay 80–95% of melt value for clean lots. Anything below 70% is a poor offer unless the item is heavily damaged.
Watch for tricks
Common scams: rigged scales, switching items, quoting per pennyweight (1.555g) instead of grams, or paying for total weight including stones.
