Kuwait is one of the most gold-obsessed markets per capita in the Gulf. Prices are quoted per gram in Kuwaiti dinar (KWD) and follow the London AM/PM fix closely, with the Kuwait Gold and Jewellers Union publishing daily reference rates.
Kuwait charges no VAT on investment gold of 995 purity or higher, and jewellery is exempt from consumption tax. Customs duty on imported gold is generally 5%, but bullion for personal use often clears without duty.
22k (locally called 'jewellery gold') is the dominant standard for bridal sets and daily wear, followed by 21k for lighter modern designs. 24k is popular for investment bars and coins, while 18k is common in Western-style branded jewellery.
Souk Al-Mubarakiya in Kuwait City, Souk Sharq and the Gold Souk in Salmiya are the main hubs. For bullion, licensed dealers such as Al-Muzaini and major bank branches (NBK, KFH) sell certified bars.
