Gold market in India
India is the world's second-largest gold consumer. Retail rates are published city-by-city by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) and quoted per 10 grams.
Taxes and import duties
3% GST applies to gold value plus 5% GST on making charges. Import duty is around 6% (Union Budget 2024), with an additional AIDC cess making the effective duty roughly 9%.
Popular karats and purities
22k is the traditional standard for jewellery and wedding sets. 24k is preferred for coins and bars. 18k and 14k are gaining share in urban markets for lightweight and diamond jewellery.
Where to buy gold in India
BIS-hallmarked jewellers such as Tanishq, Malabar Gold, Kalyan and PC Jeweller. Digital gold via MMTC-PAMP or Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) issued by RBI are popular investment routes.
Buying tip
Always check the BIS hallmark and HUID code. Buy on Akshaya Tritiya or Dhanteras only if the making charge discount is genuine — many jewellers inflate rates first.
