About gold in Hungary

Gold market in Hungary

The gold market in Hungary tracks the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) spot benchmark. Retail rates are converted from USD into HUF using the daily interbank exchange rate, then adjusted for local premiums, dealer margins and demand.

Taxes and import duties

Import duty and value-added tax in Hungary vary by gold form. Investment-grade bullion (gold of 99.5% purity or higher) is often exempt from VAT in many jurisdictions, while jewellery attracts standard VAT plus a making charge.

Popular karats and purities

24k (99.9%) is preferred for investment bars and coins, 22k (91.6%) for traditional jewellery and wedding sets, and 18k or 14k for lighter modern designs. Always look for a hallmark or assay certificate.

Where to buy gold in Hungary

Licensed bullion dealers, national mints, major bank branches and government-authorised jewellery associations are the safest routes in Hungary. Online marketplaces and unlisted shops carry higher counterfeit risk and wider spreads.

Buying tip

Compare the shop's quoted per-gram rate against the live LBMA spot converted at the day's HUF rate. A premium over spot of 3โ€“7% for coins and 1โ€“4% for bars is normal โ€” anything higher is usually the making charge.
