About 18k scrap gold
18k gold is 75% gold and 25% alloy (silver, copper, palladium or nickel). It is the premium standard for fine jewelry in Europe and luxury watch cases from Rolex, Omega and Cartier. White, yellow and rose 18k all contain the same amount of gold, so they have the same melt value per gram.
How the 18k scrap price is calculated
Buyers use one formula: weight (g) × purity × spot price per gram × payout %. With today's spot of $133.12 per gram of pure gold, 18k works out to $99.84 per gram before the buyer's margin. The margin covers assaying, refining losses (usually 1–3%), transport and profit.
Selling tip
Luxury watches and signed pieces (Cartier, Tiffany, Bulgari) are usually worth far more resold intact than melted. Weigh your items on a 0.01 g kitchen or jewelry scale before visiting a buyer, separate pieces by karat, and ask for the offer per gram in writing.
