Understanding the silver price per troy ounce
The troy ounce is the global standard unit for pricing gold, silver, platinum and palladium. One troy ounce equals exactly 31.1034768 grams — about 10% heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce used for food (28.3495 g). When a news headline says gold hit a record price, it almost always refers to one troy ounce of 24k (999.9 fine) gold quoted in US dollars.
The spot price per ounce is discovered continuously on the OTC London market and on COMEX futures in New York. The LBMA also publishes a twice-daily auction benchmark (the London AM and PM fix at 10:30 and 15:00 London time), which refiners, central banks and ETFs use to settle contracts. The live number on this page tracks the same underlying spot market and refreshes every minute.
Retail buyers rarely pay pure spot. A 1 oz bullion coin such as an American Gold Eagle or a Krugerrand typically trades at 3–7% over spot, while a 1 oz cast bar carries a 1–4% premium. Dealers buy back below spot, so the bid/ask spread — not the headline price — determines your real cost of ownership.
Silver per troy ounce — frequently asked questions
How much is silver per troy ounce today?
The live price shown at the top of this page is today's silver spot price per troy ounce, converted into every major currency in the table below. It updates every minute during market hours, so the figure you see is the current market quote rather than yesterday's close.
What is the difference between the spot price and the price a dealer charges?
Spot is the wholesale price for immediate delivery of unfabricated metal. Dealers add a premium that covers refining, minting, shipping, insurance and their margin, and they buy back at a discount to spot. Expect a 1–4% premium on bars, 3–7% on bullion coins, and considerably more on jewellery once making charges are added.
Why does the silver price per troy ounce change during the day?
Silver trades nearly 24 hours a day across Asian, European and US sessions. The price moves with the US dollar index, real interest rates, central bank buying, ETF flows and safe-haven demand. Intraday swings of 0.5–2% are routine, and larger moves follow US inflation prints and Federal Reserve decisions.
Is the ounce used for silver the same as a kitchen ounce?
No. Precious metals use the troy ounce of 31.1034768 grams, while food and postal weights use the avoirdupois ounce of 28.3495 grams. A troy ounce is roughly 9.7% heavier, so mixing the two overstates or understates value by about a tenth.
How do I convert the price per troy ounce into another weight?
Divide the ounce price by 31.1034768 to get the gram price, multiply the gram price by 11.6638 for a tola, and by 1,000 for a kilogram. The tables on this page do this automatically at the live rate, and the converter tool handles custom weights and purities.
