Understanding the gold price per gram
Gram pricing dominates retail jewellery markets across Asia, the Middle East and Europe. One troy ounce contains 31.1034768 grams, so the per-gram price is simply the ounce spot divided by 31.1034768, then multiplied by the purity of the item (0.916 for 22k, 0.750 for 18k, and so on).
Because gram amounts are small, shops quote them to two decimals and add a separate making or labour charge per gram. Two jewellers can advertise the same gram rate and still differ by 15% in the final bill once making charges, wastage and local tax are applied.
For investment, gram bars from 1 g to 100 g are the most accessible entry point, but premiums per gram fall sharply with size: a 1 g bar can carry a 15–25% premium, while a 100 g bar is usually within 2%.
Gold per gram — frequently asked questions
How much is gold per gram today?
The live price shown at the top of this page is today's gold spot price per gram, converted into every major currency in the table below. It updates every minute during market hours, so the figure you see is the current market quote rather than yesterday's close.
What is the difference between the spot price and the price a dealer charges?
Spot is the wholesale price for immediate delivery of unfabricated metal. Dealers add a premium that covers refining, minting, shipping, insurance and their margin, and they buy back at a discount to spot. Expect a 1–4% premium on bars, 3–7% on bullion coins, and considerably more on jewellery once making charges are added.
Why does the gold price per gram change during the day?
Gold trades nearly 24 hours a day across Asian, European and US sessions. The price moves with the US dollar index, real interest rates, central bank buying, ETF flows and safe-haven demand. Intraday swings of 0.5–2% are routine, and larger moves follow US inflation prints and Federal Reserve decisions.
Is the ounce used for gold the same as a kitchen ounce?
No. Precious metals use the troy ounce of 31.1034768 grams, while food and postal weights use the avoirdupois ounce of 28.3495 grams. A troy ounce is roughly 9.7% heavier, so mixing the two overstates or understates value by about a tenth.
How do I convert the price per gram into another weight?
Divide the ounce price by 31.1034768 to get the gram price, multiply the gram price by 11.6638 for a tola, and by 1,000 for a kilogram. The tables on this page do this automatically at the live rate, and the converter tool handles custom weights and purities.
Why is 22k gold cheaper per gram than 24k?
Karat measures purity out of 24 parts. 24k is 99.9% pure gold, 22k is 91.6%, 21k is 87.5%, 18k is 75% and 14k is 58.3%. The price per gram scales directly with that fraction, so 22k costs about 91.6% of the 24k price for the same weight, with the balance made up of copper, silver or zinc alloy.
Which countries quote gold per gram?
The troy ounce is the international benchmark used in London, New York and Zurich. Gram pricing dominates the Gulf, Turkey, Egypt and most of Europe; the tola is standard in Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh; India quotes per 10 grams; and China, Hong Kong and Singapore trade kilobars wholesale while quoting grams and taels at retail.
